Snakeweed Sessions

Born out of pure passion, Snakeweed Sessions was Birdmandog’s love letter to music.

 

Filmed in the legendary Snakeweed Studios, the sessions showcased raw, intimate performances by both local and international artists including Hanging Up the Moon, Monster Cat, Rachel Yamagata, Lunarin, Villagers, and more. At the time, no one knew it was us behind the camera - and that was the point. It wasn’t about us. It was about the music.

Having played together for almost 17 years, Lunarin is one of Singapore's most established acts. With 3 LPs under their belt, the band conjures a mix of the menacing A Perfect Circle/Tool with the ivory ghosts of Tori Amos. Over the years, the trio has summoned a more tempered musical side. Bringing violins and cellos to the fore, they would be more vulnerable, but no less intense. For the Snakeweed Sessions, Lunarin sticks with a stripped down arrangement, playing songs off their albums "Duae" and "The Midas Sessions". Caroline - Bicycle (Snakeweed Sessions)

Yes. Caroline Lufkin is an acoustic/electronic/pop artist. But that would be terribly misleading. For the sum of her musical parts is something quietly grander. Akin to German band The Notwist, Caroline has a rare ability to caress glitches, echoes and ambient swells into swashes of human warmth. Coupled with her voice that is always searching, this sensitivity ends up sending little shocks to your heart. Just take a listen to "Swimmer" off her 2011 album Verdugo Hills. For Snakeweed Sessions, she drifts away from her usual electronica-laced setups. Stripped down and bare, but no less intriguing. Toiling alone on verses and notes for nights, Concave Scream frontman Sean Lam sought to scratch an itch. He wanted to craft songs, playable in its entirety with just a guitar or ukulele. A personal back-to-basics, if you will. This solo hole-up pieced together Hanging Up The Moon - 11 tracks recorded fully at home, and at ungodly hours. As testament to his craftsmanship, the songs feel found. As if they have already been sung for decades. Sung by strangers halfway across the world, to sons and daughters as they curl up round a fire. These songs are in essence, communal yet personal. As Sean intended, Hanging Up The Moon is a simple and honest body of work. Simple yet very quietly captivating. Together with Leslie Low (The Observatory, Humpback Oak), Sean performs "Water Under The Bridge" off the album. Today

...is a part-documentary, part-music video capturing a surreal moment in Singapore’s history - the city’s abrupt standstill during the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown. Once-bustling streets fell silent, and the familiar rhythms of life were suspended. Against this eerie backdrop, a little-known B-side track by Humpback Oak resonated deeply:“As the world spins around / All the answers I have found / Someday, somehow, we all will meet again…” The film is a quiet reflection on collective isolation, memory, and the hope of reunion.

Four original art videos are set to a live performance of "Singapore Seasons", a conceptual suite commissioned by re: mix from four local composers, Denise Lee, Derek Lim, Chen Zhangyi and Dr Kelly Tang. It will take us on a musical journey through the four seasons of life in the city.

Singapore Through the Glass

Presented by re: mix, in collaboration with local production house - birdmandog. 26 April 2015, Sunday, 730pm Esplanade Concert Hall Tickets from $15 through SISTIC - www.sistic.com.sg The Glass is a camera lens through which four film-makers from local production house - birdmandog, document the faces, places, the past, and life today in Singapore. Four original art videos will be set to a live performance of "Singapore Seasons", a conceptual suite commissioned by re: mix from four local composers, Denise Lee, Derek Lim, Chen Zhangyi and Dr Kelly Tang. It will take us on a musical journey through the four seasons of life in the city. From the myriad of faces that make up our nation, to the harmony between our modern structures and nature, to places that evoke a feeling of nostalgia, to the everyday scenes of Singapore seen through the window of a taxi - a poetic take on life in Singapore. But more than anything, the spirit of the videos played in harmony with the music will show that Singapore is more than just our home but a place that we all have a stake in - the garden city that grows together and because of her people. The Glass is also Philip Glass, an American composer who wrote another conceptual work - The American Four Seasons. re: mix invites its audience to listen and look through two contrasting lenses for a unique focus on Singapore.
